What’s a balance transfer and why would I want one?

A balance transfer is the process of transferring high-interest debt from one credit card to another with a lower interest rate. Some of the benefits are:

  • Money saver: lower interest rate means lower payments, saving you money.
  • Pay down debt faster: with the lower interest rate, more of your monthly payment will go towards reducing your credit card balance instead of interest.
  • Simplifying your finances: consolidate your credit card debt onto one card, potentially reducing annual fees and making it easier and more convenient to pay off one card than several.

Why would I transfer my balance to a Conexus Mastercard?

  • No transfer fee: we’d rather see this money get a head start towards your balance instead of adding an additional fee.

I don't have a Conexus Mastercard, how would I transfer my balance? Expand/Collapse

In order to transfer a balance you will need apply for a Conexus Mastercard. We have a variety of card options and our team of experts can help find the card that’s right for you.

All consumer and business cards are eligible for the promotional balance transfer rate. USD cards are excluded.

New cardholders: balance transfers can be requested after you receive and activate your new card.

Existing cardholders: balance transfers can be requested at any time.

Transfer online: existing cardholders can initiate a balance transfer via your MyCardInfo account (ADD LINK: Conexus.ca/mycardinfo). You will require the destination biller/payee name, as well as the account/card number associated with the account.

For both options, use promo code '2021' when applying for the promotional rate.

Yes, the promo code ‘2021’ must be entered under “promo code” when applying online via your MyCardInfo account to receive the promotional rate. If not included the regular balance transfer rate will apply, which varies, depending on card type.

When contacting us via phone, mention the promo code to your financial advisor or our Member Contact Centre.

Is there really no transfer fee? Expand/Collapse

That's correct! With your financial well-being in mind, we’d rather see this money get a head start towards your balance. We do not charge a percentage of the transfer as a fee and there are no other hidden fees you need to worry about!

How much can I transfer as a Conexus Mastercard cardholder? Expand/Collapse

When transferring a balance on MyCardInfo there is a maximum transfer amount of $7,500 (note: maximum transfer set in place for fraud protection purposes). Otherwise, you can transfer up to your available credit by contacting your financial advisor or our Member Contact Centre at 1-800-667-7477.

Yes, the minimum transfer amount for the promotional rate is $500.

Can I transfer a balance from my Conexus Mastercard to another Conexus Mastercard? Expand/Collapse

No, balances can only be transferred from other Financial Institutions.

How many transfers can I process? Expand/Collapse

You can transfer as many balances as your credit limit allows.

Is the balance transfer rate the same as the purchase rate? Expand/Collapse

This offer provides a promotional rate for balance transfers. Once this promotional rate has expired after 6 months, the balance transfer rate will revert to the standard interest rate, which is the same as the purchase rate.

When the promotional rate expires, what will the rate be? Expand/Collapse

When the offer expires after six months, your rate will revert to the standard interest rate which is the same as the rate charged for new purchases. With your financial well-being in mind, we do NOT charge a higher rate than the purchase rate and there are no hidden fees!

What is an annual interest rate, and where do I find my interest rate information? Expand/Collapse

Annual interest rate is a measure of the cost of credit, expressed as a yearly rate. It is the amount of interest that is billed to your account for the convenience of utilizing your credit line. There is a 25 day grace period, where no interest will be charged on that months merchandise purchases.

Please note: cash advances do not have a grace period. Unlike purchases, balance transfers are treated as cash advances, therefore interest accrues from the date of posting.

You can view your current annual interest rate online at conexus.ca/MyCardInfo or on your monthly statement. The complete annual interest rate details are included with your card when your account is approved.

Do I earn points on balance transfers? Expand/Collapse

No, points are only earned on purchases. Cash Advances and balance transfers do not earn Conexus Rewards points.

How is my payment applied? Expand/Collapse

Payments are applied in the following order:

  1. Credit charges (ex: interest)
  2. Cash advances or balance transfers from previous statements.    
  3. Purchases that carry interest
  4. Cash advances or balance transfers from the current statement
  5. Purchases from current statement

¹This offer is available until December 31, 2021 on all Conexus consumer and business credit card accounts except the US Dollar card. During the promotional period, cardholders can transfer balances to a Conexus Mastercard at the promotional annual interest rate of 3.9% by using promo code 2021.

BALANCE TRANSFER PROCESS: Balance transfers can be requested after you receive and activate your card. You can initiate a balance transfer via MyCardInfo, in a branch or by contacting Cardholder Services. You will need to provide us with the destination biller/payee name as well as the account/card# associated with the account.

BALANCE TRANSFER PROMOTIONAL OFFER: The promotional 3.9% annual interest rate for balance transfers applies for up to 6 months from the date of transfer and will be applied automatically when using promo code 2021. When you make payments on your account, we apply the payments to items with lower interest rates before items with higher interest rates which may result in your balance transfer being paid off earlier than other items on your account. When the promotional rate ends, your standard interest rate will apply to any amount of the balance transfer still outstanding. This offer may be extended or ended at any time without prior notice. Account credits on a credit card cannot be transferred as a balance transfer to a Conexus Mastercard. You cannot initiate a balance transfer which will result in your credit limit being exceeded.  The promotional interest rate on the balance transfer will only apply as long as your account is in good standing and you do not exceed your credit limit.  No Conexus Rewards are earned on a balance transfer. The minimum amount of a balance transfer is $500. You may make multiple balance transfers during the promotional period as long as each is $500 or more and you do not exceed your credit limit.

This promotional offer does not apply to transfers between Conexus accounts. Please continue to make your regular payments on accounts from which you are transferring a balance until you receive confirmation that the transfer has been completed. If you want to transfer a balance from another credit card issued by Collabria, you must visit a branch (the issuer of a card will be shown on the back of the card).
