What you need to open an account

Opening a new account begins with confirming your identity. This process must be done in person and an appointment is needed. To confirm your identity you will need to bring the following with you: a valid government issued photo ID and your Social Insurance Number (SIN). Accepted photo ID’s include:

  • Drivers license

  • Passport

  • Status card/Treaty card

  • Permanent resident card

  • Province & Territory ID card

  • Foreign passport

If the individual does not have a government-issued ID, an acceptable original document1 of two of the following could be your original birth certificate, marriage certificate, or refugee program.

Youth account

Opening an account for 18 and under

Under 12 will require parent or guardian identification

Age 12-15 requires one piece of photo ID of the child and the guardian

Age 16-18 requires one photo ID of the youth

Shared or dual account

Opening a shared or dual account

Both members will need to be present to sign off on the change in branch

All account holders must sign to change the operation or ownership of the account

Ensure you understand the implications of joint ownership, including how funds will be managed in the event of death or changes to the account

1 Document must be the original paper or electronic document, it cannot be a photocopy, a fax, or digitally scanned. It must be valid and unaltered. If any information has been combined from more than one source, it is not acceptable, and current. If there is no expiry date, it must be a recent version of the document.

2 If you decline a credit check for a chequing account there will be restrictions.
